SYNOPSIS:
Many people are now inflicted by a virus which is known as HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. In Africa, almost 900,000 of them have HIV. This is cause by a disease which is commonly found in primates. And some theorized that this disease is transmitted to humans by means of physical contact, or by eating a primate which is infected by that disease.
Only few people have immunity for this disease, just like Steve. He had actually volunteered himself so that scientists could study why he not infected by this virus. And then the scientists found out that the virus just bounce back, and cannot enter his body.
Here in the Philippines, many are also dying because of HIV. But this disease is more prevalent in Africa. In jails, most inmates have HIV. Maybe, it’s the reason why jails are regarded as the breeding ground for virus. There are some who are educating the inmates about HIV, one of them is Lonnie. He is teaching them the possible ill-effects of HIV, so that the inmates could prevent it, by means of having a sexual intercourse safely. There are some safely measures like condom.
Inmates are more protected to HIV than those people who are in bars and sexually active, because they are regularly taking medicines, and have a routine check-up. We all know that inmates have a bad image in our society. Some even think that inmates will always do something bad. But it’s good that there are still persons who are helping these inmates to re-enter the society. One of them is Antionette. She is an ex-convict, and she helps inmates by giving them faith and hope.
Also, some are educating the youth to some information about HIV. And some of these youth are Jowhara, Ryan, Travis, Brandon, and Elizabeth. They are well-informed of its causes and effects, and then they help other youth to be also aware of the HIV, and also how to prevent it. They called this “peer helping.”
One of the people who are infected by HIV is Lisa. She is regularly taking her medicines, which helps her prevent the spreading of virus in her body.
But for us, to prevent this virus, scientists and doctors suggest that we must stay clean in and out.
COMMENTARIES:
I am not against those persons who are sexually active. But for me, we must avoid having sex while we are studying or while we are not really committed to someone since we are still young, and we have to be responsible enough to take a good care of ourselves. If someone wants to have a sexual intercourse with another person, it is his/her responsibility to prevent himself/herself from being infected by a virus if ever his/her partner is infected or he/she is not confident that his/her partner is virus-free.
I am aware that many people are dying because of HIV, and it’s a really critical disease that needs to be given immediate cure. But to take medicines is not just enough. We must prevent it from infecting us before it occurs. As they said, prevention is the best treatment.
I am greatly amazed of those persons who are volunteering to educate other people about HIV, because it’s really a great help to our society, especially to those inmates. They are inmates but it doesn’t mean that they should not be given an opportunity to live; especially many of the inmates are infected by HIV.
Also, the peer helping could help a lot in their country because they teach the youth to be more careful if ever they would have a sexual intercourse with someone. Actually, our society nowadays doesn’t really care if we would have sex, but we would now care if this will infect many people, including our neighbors and relatives, and eventually it can also affect us.
Nowadays, youth are sexually active, so it’s better if they will have a broad understanding of the possible effects if they will not use safety measures to prevent themselves from being infected by a virus.
HIV now is a very dreadful disease. And thousands of people are dying and experiencing this disease. So I suggest that we must be careful. And as what I have read in College Sociology book, we must stick to only one partner, and have a regular check-up to prevent ourselves from being infected by AIDS.

BATANG-KALAKAL

Synopsis:
Batang-Kalakal” is the story of the children who are picking garbage in a dirty river, and even bathe there. Most of these children are using the money they earned for financial support of their family and even for their education.
Liza was not taking her first meal for the day before she goes to school because they don’t have money to buy for their breakfast. It is not obvious in her body that she was already 15 years old because she’s thin. After her class, she is going directly in the river. She is picking up cans, and other garbage that can be traded or what they called “kalakal.”
In not so far distance, Liza’s companion, Jaymar is also picking up some garbage in a dirty river. He almost got wounded by a piece of glass.
The water is violently moving that’s why they were very careful not to fall down and be carried away by the wave. They are bathing on a dirty river, but for them it is a paradise.
While swimming, they are still picking up garbage. After they bathe, Liza is shaking because of cold. Liza is pursuing to resist this because she doesn’t want to be like her sister who had not able to be educated.
Liza’s mother is a laundry-woman, and her father had already died. Liza still continued walking even with bare feet.
Jiboy is the youngest of the children and he is also the most industrious among them. His pregnant mother has no work, and his father left them that are why he really needs to work hard to sustain their needs.
Children could not just obtain wounds from gathering garbage in the river; they could also be drowned like what happened to Liza.
Aling Naty, a resident of that place, said that her son Michael had died because he was struck by a flowing electric current while struggling to reach the cable of the electricity even it could expose him to danger.
Most of those who are picking up garbage in the river are illegal settlers, and those who are lacking short of livelihood. The government is providing guidance for some of the residents of this place, but unfortunately, this did not reach Liza’s place.
Jiboy and Liza were brought to the hospital to examine their health condition. They found out that Jiboy got infected that’s why he needs to be cured immediately. And Liza had undergone an x-ray test and it was found out that she was toxic-infected. But even they got various diseases; they would still continue picking garbage in the river, because they can still survive with wounds but not without food.
Liza’s mother Virginia said that Liza is the top 10. She no longer stopped her in picking garbage in the river because it is the only way for her to finish her studies. She was still using the sleepers she had even it already have holes. And also she’s still using the notebook she had since grade 1. She’s just making a wise use of it because she doesn’t know when she will be able to buy a new one.
The anger in her situation can be manifested in her eyes. And it seems apparent that government and our society have a great deficit with these people.
Commentaries:
I really adore them because they work hard and are determined to uplift their condition. Some are even willing to risk their lives just to fill those hungry stomachs.
I can understand the situation of Liza, because I think she’s looking for a father figure who can help her, support their family, and stand as the pillar of their family. I, also feel the same way. And sometimes, I am envious of those children who had their father with them.
I also like her attitude because she never stops pursuing her studies even they had financial problems. She truly values her education because she believes that it will help her fulfill her dreams.
I am touched with their stories. It seems that an arrow had strike my heart as I watched the video. I’m still asking why they are experiencing this kind of troubles. But I can’t do anything. I wished I could just give them a better future in a glimpse of time.
Also, I would suggest that we must think of our environment. We must learn to appreciate it. Let’s not throw away garbage in just any places, like rivers and lakes, so that these children will be safe from wounds they can get in picking up some cans. What’s the use of trash cans, right? We must have trash cans in every place so that these children will just pick garbage in their trash cans. Let’s give opportunity for these children who really work hard for their future.
For an unbiased comment, I won’t just criticize the government. In our society, I know that many people care, but caring is not enough. We must put them into action. If you don’t want a polluted country, then throw your garbage in proper place. If you can’t provide the needs for your children, then think first before you give birth to them. Save first for their future. If you just spend your money for gambling or illegal drugs, why not just give it to those who needed it most to spend it for their education.

Synopsis:
Nowadays, our country is facing a bulk of crises. Some of these are poverty, corruption, poor quality education, a growing number of crimes and insufficient jobs for Filipinos. But education and poverty will be given more emphasis since they related to us students.
Let’s not deny the fact that most Filipinos are in poverty line, thus they can’t afford a quality education. Some of them are mostly from depressed areas. Maricel and Sheila Padera, Madeleine, Merlina Arabis, Analyn and Luis are just a few of these students. They are willing to learn but they are incapable of obtaining quality education. As they say, education is expensive.
Some of the reasons behind poor quality education are lack of finances; lack of teachers, books, and rooms; malnutrition which gives rise to continuous drop-outs of the students; and far too many students in a room that some students can’t almost hear the lessons that are discussed.
Some students like Maricel and Sheila Padera are often facing a precarious journey. They are walking for almost 3 hours to school although they are uncertain of the journey they are traveling. And come to think of it. That journey is their school. They are not sure whether they are heeding the right tract but one thing is for sure. They are determined to finish their studies even their dreams are as far as the destination to their school.
There are also some schools that have no books to use that’s why the teacher needs to borrow a book from their acquaintances. There are also some instances when teachers get absent in the class because of sickness and many other reasons, and when this happens a student teaches his co-students. One of them is Madeleine. She is writing the lectures in a blackboard with holes in order for her classmates to copy it.
In Masbate, which is known to be the 2nd poorest province in the country, there is a student who is older than her teacher. She is Merlina Arabis. She is very determined to finish her studies though she is already 52 years old.
Commentaries:
I can say that poor Filipinos are really oppressed with many troubles. I can imagine how they really want to finish their studies amidst all their trials and incapability to support their needs. As I watch the video, I felt some sort of guilt upon me. My mother is working capable of supporting my finances in education but I’m somewhat taking it easy when it comes to my studies. Sometimes, I ignore some of my subjects not knowing that there are thousands of students who want to be in my place.
I am amazed with the desire of Analyn to pursue her studies amidst the poverty her family is experiencing and she often don’t have food to eat but behind that, she still excels in the class. I wished all students were as determined as her.
There will come a time when students will be graduating from their schools but the problem they have experienced will remain unless the government takes action upon this matter. I can also say that we Filipinos are also responsible to make our dream come to reality. Let’s work hard for a better future.
Some students also cannot concentrate with their studies because they are working hard to support their family, just like Luis. Most Filipinos are poor because they are not educated, and they are not educated because they are poor but it doesn’t mean that those Filipinos will remain in the poverty level. I still believe that life will be better. We just need patience and determination.

The Philippines’ problem in malnutrition can now be aligned with that of Africa. Here in Philippines, we can manifest a greater number of Filipinos who’s experiencing a faulty and inadequate nutrition.
Just like Angela, she was undernourished but still she managed to have survived but it was just for a while. She only rose 3 times a day and she’s already 3 months with that depressed condition. Her 2 siblings had already died with the same condition. The last feeding program that was conducted in their place was in the year 2000. Unfortunately, it is not sufficient to sustain the daily needs of the families in depressed areas.
Aside from her sickness, she had also undergone ridicule judgment from her neighbors for they called her hunchback. She was suffering from pneumonia, an inflammatory disease of the lungs. She had a chronic malnutrition which is characterized by long duration or frequent recurrence. She was praying for Mother Mary and Saint Nazarene for her wellness. She’s still hoping that everything would turn exactly the way they want life to be. But a tragic event happened, in April 10, 2005 Angela died.
Hansol family was also experiencing a burdensome life. Their life would be simply described like a crab thrusting it with difficulties. Jeremie was the oldest in the family and was the most prone to sickness. He and his other siblings were malnourished. Actually, it’s not surprising for they only had 1 kg of rice and 1 kg of tiny fresh water crabs, which was to be shared by 9 heads as their lunch. They had concluded that Jeremie might had a tapeworm in the abdomen that affected the lungs. He was also suffering from pneumonia. As the doctor had told them, his sickness was not just a simple asthma. He couldn’t almost breathe because of malnutrition that could be noticed in his fingers. It’s difficult for their parents to see their children in the oppressed condition. Oftentimes, they were only eating what was left.
Another victim of malnutrition was Judy Ann. She could no longer walk for the reason of her sickness. Her mother, Lourdes Villas, said that they were already lucky enough if they had think that 20 pesos issardines as their viand. Lourdes was just crying when they were sleeping. Sometimes, she’s asking the Most High what tomorrow would bring to them. Some of us were working to have some food to eat and supply their needs. But they were working to pay other people. For every stamp made by a father, 8 offsprings and a pregnant wife were awaiting. The money he had earned won’t be sufficient for 10 stomachs.
It’s really downcasting that in the country where liposuction is a trend, millions of people are craving the need for food. Let’s all be aware that millions of people are living their life with only 20 pesos, yet some including myself, think that 20 pesos is of little use.
COMMENTARIES:
Will we remain to be dependent on the feeding program of the government and other institutions? Why do we tend to ridicule our neighbors who are suffering a critical condition? Are we going to wait for the action of the government instrumentalities?
Just like the malnutrition of many Filipinos, the disease of our country can be cure. But the difficult question is not how but WHEN. Most government officials are full of promises but lack of action. They are only making the Filipinos believe that they are worthy to be elected, but after that what happen is that they just abandoned the Filipinos. Can’t they hear the cry of the Filipinos? What if they are on the situation of the poor families?
We are facing a variety of social problems. But when are we going to heal it? Our country is wounded. Poor families are pressed on every side of troubles. Many of them want to educate their children. But how will they be able to accomplish it if their learning is only limited of what their wealth can offer.
Truly, youth is the seed of the next generation. So we must not allow that these seeds will just be thrown away. We must plant them in a good soil so they will bear good fruits, fruits that will be benefited by everyone in this nation of ours. A certain man just said, “Youth is the only thing that can replace money...” So why not invest your wealth with these poor malnourished children. Just try and make a difference, and I’m pretty sure that it will yield interest. I hope that every rich man will whole-heartedly help people who are in poverty line. Now, I am wondering why some rich persons can easily help their middle class friends who are in need but didn’t even bother to give alms to the poor. “Think….because the solution to these problems always starts within us…”

Just like the malnutrition of many Filipinos, the disease of our country can be cure. But the difficult question is not how but WHEN. Most government officials are full of promises but lack of action. We are facing a variety of social problems. But when are we going to heal it? Our country is wounded. Poor families are pressed on every side of troubles. Many of them want to educate their children. But how will they be able to accomplish it if their learning is only limited of what their wealth can offer.
Truly, youth is the seed of the next generation. So we must not allow that these seeds will just be thrown away. We must plant them in a good soil so they will bear good fruits, fruits that will be benefited by everyone in this nation of ours. A certain man just said, “Youth is the only thing that can replace money...” So why not invest your wealth with these poor malnourished children. Just try and make a difference, and I’m pretty sure that it will yield interest. I hope that every rich man will whole-heartedly help people who are in poverty line. Now, I am wondering why some rich persons can easily help their middle class friends who are in need but didn’t even bother to give alms to the poor. “Think….because the solution to these problems always starts within us…”

One of the fishermen said that he will let his children study only if the are willing. There is merriment for a while, but then action proceeds. Fortunately, their luck had come. They caught big fishes; 2 tuna in 2 separate hooks and a swordfish. They slept early, but suddenly, it rains. They depart in their voyage. They were disturbed when a boat submerged which accommodate the staffs of I-witness. The fishermen are like sardines as they sleep. Donnie doesn’t have a catch yet, but the only thing who’s making him happy is his family. He was working as baggage carrier. His only daughter who was studying doesn’t want to go to school sometimes. She wanted to buy toys for them. She cried. And Sandra Aguinaldo didn’t know how to comfort a child who’s crying because of poverty.
Amy, the wife of Jerry, was selling cell phone load, beauty products as an additional earnings for her family, and it’s also her pastime when her husband was still away. Their return is like good news. They caught 15 tuna. And the male tuna costs higher than female tuna, because it has a firmer meat. But as we all know tuna has a high price either male or female. Most fishermen are being outsmarted by buyers. Danny had caught 50-kg tuna which is the biggest caught. Fishermen oftentimes bear the loss. When fishes cost high in the market, it costs 300. But they only gave him 3000 for 50 kg? It costs 280 per kg. He won’t earn 30% of the gain because he did not contribute to the boat. It’s almost a week that Nonoy had not returned. The fishermen who already returned were celebrating because they came back with a caught. They took long in the midsea because the whether was unfavorable. The worry of their love ones subsides. They were paid 83000 for 10 tunas. The tuna they difficultly caught were not tasted by their families. It falls in the hands of the exporters who will bring this tuna to other countries.
Now, the question that was leave by the reporter is how we will protect the fishermen?

Above all, poverty, for me is the biggest issue that needs to be solved because it can greatly affects our society… A person can kill because of destitution… and any other affects. Another thing, poverty is a result of unequal distribution of wealth. But how can we equally distribute the wealth of our country if billions of people are sharing on this wealth. Unfortunately, our resources are not enough… We also need to control the population.

But in Hongkong, they are helping each other. Six thousand of the OFW are teachers, but because of the low salary of the teachers in our country, they had applied as domestic helpers in abroad.
OFW are regarded as new heroes. But what should we call those domestic helpers that are willing to sacrifice their salary abroad, just to teach and serve our fellowmen?
They are conducting pageant for domestic helpers during pastime. Many of them finished their tertiary education, but they can’t find job in the Philippines. They had a chance to live in a progressive and peaceful country.
Mercy is teaching the Chinese children, Samantha and Ambross. Mercy also knows how to cook. She is already 13 years in Hongkong, but still, she’s not forgetting her profession, which is teaching. The salary that she is receiving is the salary for maids. 2000 OFW want to go back to teach.
The reporter asked this question: Why do they want to teach? Some said, for the fulfillment of their dreams and some said that they want to be with their family.
Daisy is the editor of the newspaper that provides free newspaper for OFW. And also the one who screens those who are willing to go back in our country to teach. Many of them are taking Licensure Examination for Teachers or LET.
Mercy took the exam and passed. Her husband, Sammy, is in Saudi Arabia and also an OFW. They are married for almost 10 years, but they shared not just a bit of that time together.
Sammy was working in Hongkong, where only few Filipino men are working as domestic helper than women, for 5 years. He followed his wife there. Sammy is a driver who finds a work in the Philippines as a teacher. They have a constructed house in the Philippines, but Delia would be left alone to work.
Lenie, the younger sister of Delia bought some “pasalubong” for her children in the Philippines. Their mother is also working as OFW.
While in the airport, they met a certain OFW who will return to the Philippines for a sadder reason. The 2 tricycle that she had worked hard of was sold to spend in gambling. Her 7 years of sacrifices were useless.
Sammy would now see his 2 kids but then Delia would be left alone.
Mercy’s departure to Hongkong was as sorrowful as her departure to the Philippines because she already gets close with the family she had worked with. Samantha used to sleep beside Mercy. Ambross was taught by the right spelling of English words and how to construct a good sentence. And Samantha, her sister is going to miss her. Mercy spent a long time with their family. Alice, their mother, gave her a bonus, jewelry and a photo album of their family.
The whole family joined her in the airport. Margie, sister of Mercy, replaced her. Mercy wants to serve her country.
Rizalyn is teaching in a school in Nagtahan, Manila. And she top notched the exam. She used her savings in abroad for insurance and was used in building their house. She returned to be with his child. But she felt that her child gets so far away with her and she gets a difficulty in communicating with her family. She returned to be with his child.
Hermie worked as a domestic helper for 6 years. But she realized that it’s not enough just to pass the exam. There’s no vacancy in the school she is applying. At last, she got her appointment papers. Now, she’s ready to face her new career. Mercy had a sad farewell. And now, not just one family will benefit in her service but one town.
Her father died while she’s in Hongkong. He didn’t see her as a teacher. She was lucky with the family she worked with. If she decided to go back to Hongkong, she will go back their as a friend not a domestic helper. Alice said she wanted Delia to write her.

Since most Filipinos are financially in need, they have to find a job. But then, our government cannot offer a sufficient job for Filipinos that’s why, one of their options is to leave our country and serve other nation. I can’t blame them, because many Filipinos get the chance to be financially stable by working in other countries.
I hope those relatives, especially the children, of the OFW, who are benefiting with the money they are sending for them, would realize their parents/relatives hard work. They are not having an easy life in other countries. The money they send is equivalent to their eagerness to provide them a better future.

“Kalusugan” is a special report to remind the people of one of the most pressing issues facing the country. This revealed the biggest issue that needs to be given full attention. In this episode of Philippine Agenda, Arnold Clavio examined the country's lack of health services. It also discussed the alarming state of our health care system. Philippine Agenda documented a provincial hospital so ill-equipped that patients have to bring their own folding bed or mat, and lie in the corridors for days unattended, and sometimes they need to wait for quite some time before the doctor could actually checked them. Philippine Agenda covered a town in Mindanao where people die without ever seeing a doctor and a seemingly simple disease like scabies becomes fatal for children. One of these children is Joel. His other sibling had already died because of the same disease.
Every child needs to be caress by a mother, but in one of the homes in Mindanao, the one who cradles a child is also a child. His name is Di. At a very young age, he cradles his younger sibling. He lacks nutrition and he always had colds. He slowly grows compared to his siblings. It’s unsurprising because the only food they were eating were corn and “kamote”. It’s not obvious in his body that he is 5 years old. The nearest health center is 4 hours away by foot and only has a handful of paracetamol in stock. That is why most of them don’t bother to visit the hospital. The bigger hospital in their town also has insufficient facilities.
They only have 2 doctors in their town and for that reason; most of the patients are not checked. The World Health Organization stated that in every town, there should be a health center. But our health centers are almost only halt of the towns in our country. Furthermore, in some towns, they lack of facilities and medicines. The stock of medicines is only sufficient for 10 people.
Lolo Deweg was brought to the nearest hospital, which is 5 hour away from their town. The doctor said he was anemic. He has a recurring fever and infection. The other patient beside his bed seemed to have a difficulty in breathing. She was Lydia and had been in the hospital for a week. Norma said that her sister’s breath is like her last breath. They are spending a thousand everyday because her condition was already severe tuberculosis. The condition of Lydia gets severe because of high prices of medicine. Lydia died because the medicine cannot fill the 10 years of not consulting the doctor. The program witnessed the final days of Lydia and the clinic that runs out of medicine just as she takes her last breath. In the last hours of her life, she lamented for hunger and lack of medicine. Though some say that the medicines are cheap, still many of the Filipinos can’t afford it. Our country is still importing medicines in Pakistan, because this country provides cheaper prices of medicines.

I hope that wealthy people will help them especially the leaders of our country. I know that they are wealthy enough. Can’t they share some of this wealth to these people? If they truly want to serve our country, then they must do it without expecting extrinsic rewards.
Also, I agree with the concept of family planning, because it’s really difficult to provide subsidies for billions of people. We must control the population. Although it’s against the bible, I feel that not conforming to family planning is indirectly killing people because of overpopulation; many don’t have food to eat, and some even kill people just to sustain their needs.

“Kalusugan” is a special report to remind the people of one of the most pressing issues facing the country. This revealed the biggest issue that needs to be given full attention. In this episode of Philippine Agenda, Arnold Clavio examined the country's lack of health services. It also discussed the alarming state of our health care system. Philippine Agenda documented a provincial hospital so ill-equipped that patients have to bring their own folding bed or mat, and lie in the corridors for days unattended, and sometimes they need to wait for quite some time before the doctor could actually checked them. Philippine Agenda covered a town in Mindanao where people die without ever seeing a doctor and a seemingly simple disease like scabies becomes fatal for children. One of these children is Joel. His other sibling had already died because of the same disease.
Every child needs to be caress by a mother, but in one of the homes in Mindanao, the one who cradles a child is also a child. His name is Di. At a very young age, he cradles his younger sibling. He lacks nutrition and he always had colds. He slowly grows compared to his siblings. It’s unsurprising because the only food they were eating were corn and “kamote”. It’s not obvious in his body that he is 5 years old. The nearest health center is 4 hours away by foot and only has a handful of paracetamol in stock. That is why most of them don’t bother to visit the hospital. The bigger hospital in their town also has insufficient facilities.
They only have 2 doctors in their town and for that reason; most of the patients are not checked. The World Health Organization stated that in every town, there should be a health center. But our health centers are almost only halt of the towns in our country. Furthermore, in some towns, they lack of facilities and medicines. The stock of medicines is only sufficient for 10 people.
Lolo Deweg was brought to the nearest hospital, which is 5 hour away from their town. The doctor said he was anemic. He has a recurring fever and infection. The other patient beside his bed seemed to have a difficulty in breathing. She was Lydia and had been in the hospital for a week. Norma said that her sister’s breath is like her last breath. They are spending a thousand everyday because her condition was already severe tuberculosis. The condition of Lydia gets severe because of high prices of medicine. Lydia died because the medicine cannot fill the 10 years of not consulting the doctor. The program witnessed the final days of Lydia and the clinic that runs out of medicine just as she takes her last breath. In the last hours of her life, she lamented for hunger and lack of medicine. Her grandmother stays on the other side of the street when she’s still young. Ekang knew that her mother is a vendor…Yes, she’s an unusual vendor; because what she sells are girls. They costs 300 each, and she gets 100 as a commission for every girl. Prostitution is the only way to provide the needs of her daughter, that’s why she got angry when saw that her daughter is a prostitute, and also taking drugs.
They were formerly rich. They had a row of apartment. Now, they only have one room and one comfort room. Their trouble started when her mother got sick that’s why Aling Lita decided to work as a prostitute. When Aling Lita began to have vices, take drugs, stop schooling, and get pregnant, she stop letting boys used her body. She only gets into drug-dealing. Aling Lita said that people can’t judge her because she’s only doing this for her family.
As time passed, Melay, daughter of Aling Lita, ramped herself in the street. Melay was a rocker and a shabu-dealer. Melay was taking the drugs that were not consumed. She’s 10 years old when her mother got addicted to drugs. It’s not a secret that her mother is offering the service of other girls in the street.
Benjie, son of Aling Lita, always got home late. Oftentimes, it’s past 12. He was the only hope in their family. He likes to be in their province to escape the problems. Benjie is oftentimes in the computer shop during his class hours. He no longer wants to go home because he wants to elude something. When he’s still young, he told himself that he don’t want to follow the deeds of her mother and sister. He just drinks alcoholic beverages and taking cigarettes. If he would be given the chance to choose a family, he will not choose the family he have now. He wants a better family…a better life. If he could just escape her family, then he would do it.
Ekang wore her finest clothes. They don’t often go out complete, and it happens in front of the altar. They are all quiet as the child was baptized to be a Christian. But they hope, just for this child, their world will change. If they could just go back the time, he would just study hard.
After 3 days, they asked Aling Lita if her mother had been a good mother. She said yes because she had experience it.
The reporter had leave these questions unanswered: When will she be aware of the truth? How long can they keep it as a secret?
Commentaries:
There are many questions in my mind. Will Ekang be the same as her family? As it was said, “the fruit is known by its tree.” So, there’s a possibility that Ekang will be the same as them. Environment affects the personality of an individual. She will do what she sees in the environment. But also, there’s a saying “you are responsible for the road you choose to travel. If Ekang wants a better life, then she can choose to avoid these things. I can say this because my father also had a vice. He was into drinking and smoking, but I didn’t inherit this kind of bad habit.
Some say, drinking alcoholic beverages in an escape to reality. Yes, I agree. Some are drinking because they believe that it can ease the pain.
I cannot blame Aling Lita, because she just do what she thinks is right. Though, prostitution is not an acceptable occupation in our country, but out of poverty, some were able to do anything just to fill those hungry stomachs.
I would say that I’m opposed to drug-dealings because they are deteriorating the lives of many people. Many lives are ruined, even families. I hope they avoid that kind of business because it will not give them a better future.
Prostitution should also be avoided because they can get diseases from their customers. They aren’t certain if their customers are from HIV. They might die because of this disease.
Robbery, also, is not an acceptable means of living. But for them, it is a way to sustain their lives.
Our country is experiencing a variety of social problems. And it’s really difficult for me, and maybe for everyone of us, to figure out the root-cause of these problems. But if we will not be able to solve these problems, then I won’t be surprise if our country will be known to other countries as the most depressed country in the world.
I’m really curious of what will be the future of Ekang. I hope she finds another means of living…a living which is legal… As one said, he likes Christianism but not Christians. Maybe, he had said this because not all Christians are really baptized in the heart. The new baptized baby of their family must be baptized and they must nurture him in a good environment.
As a just human being, I’m not really in the position to judge them. But if they can find a better work, then they work hard for it. And life is full of blessings. May the child be that blessing who will bring the wonderful change in them.

The news article “Basurero” deals with one of the ceaseless social problems in the Philippines – garbage. This story gave a picture in mind of the different ways of living of “basureros or scavengers” – people who live off garbage. The first case was a family who lives in an overpass in Cubao. They are called “magbabatchoy” or a person who collects and eats waste. They look for food in the trash – usually from fast food restaurants. They were asking permission from the guard if they could overlooked at their garbage. They were struggling for the leftovers of the customers such as: “buto-buto”, leftover fishes or vegetables, and others, which they re-cook when they got home. But sometimes they eat it on the spot.
One of these persons is Jennifer. She and her family were waiting for the waiter to put their garbage outside so that they could overlook it. They are doing it at night so that they would not be recognized. She was doing this just something to have something to eat. They are heating this food so that the germs will be killed. They have a house in Marinduque but they don’t have food to eat there. For most people it is garbage, but for them it is something that sustains their family.
The night they covered that segment, “mambabatchoy” tend to dare Jay Taruc. They prepared a plateful of leftovers and asked him to eat with them. Unfortunately Jay did not manage to disagree. They were all laughing at him and were waiting for him to eat and it took him sometime before he dug in and got a spoonful. And, he also gave his crew their share.
Thousands of the Filipinos were dwelling on the streets that were made of cartons. Many are also begging on the streets as we can see in Quiapo and other places here in Manila. They have dirty feet and their homes were built from garbages. They also gather their food in the garbage.
Pier 18 Tondo Manila is the biggest dumpsite in the Philippines. It replaced the Smokey Mountain after it had been closed. 500 “tambakeros” were there, and half of them were children. Few of them were voluntarily helping their parents. One of them was Jessie. He was called “putol” or maimed, because his hand was cut. It’s been his 3 years as a “tambakero” and he was used of working. He said he can have some money in the garbage.
One of the young scavengers had already died. His name is Jr. He worked there to help his family. He was earning 300-500 a day, and he was ignoring the tiredness just to earn, but unfortunately, his work became the reason for his death. He was crushed by bulldozer.
Some of the scavengers are using illegal drugs. Some say that being a scavenger is the worst child labor because they were exposed to dirt and chemicals. One of them had reach the age 50 in the garbage-life. One can say that in this place, all the ill things are here. Most of them have perseverance and industrious, because if not they won’t persist in gathering garbages. They are struggling for garbages.
Jay Taruc, a newscaster did a bit of role-playing during the production of “Basurero”. He played the part of the scavenger and he spent two hours in the dumpsite looking for plastic bottles and cans. He was been wounded because of garbage cans, but he only earned P6 for a basket full of trash.
Poverty is the topmost problem in our country of all time. It is said to be widely spread especially nowadays in urban cities such as; Quezon City and other areas of Metro Manila. Jay Taruc's “Basurero” unraveled the depressing situation of many Filipinos who feed on leftover food, now called “Batchoy”. This documentary merely emphasized the effect of the poverty in every family. It made them much more willing to do anything, everything in order to find some resources of food and shelters-even in dump sites without thinking the effects to their health and lives.
All the people live in dump site have one interest and work which is “pagbabasura/basurero”. They depend there meals and needs in garbage, but the most critical situation of the scavenger’s are the exposure in different diseases and contaminated materials that brought diseases like; skin disease, respiratory illness, etc. Everyday, they risk there life in order to fill those hungry stomach and most of the scavengers in dump site are young and innocent to know the possibilities accident or sickness that they can get. They forcedly do crimes in order to have money for there needs and foods for there families.

I salute them because despite of their poverty, they were not doing illegal means just to survive. Trash has been a great additional pollution to our country. We must dispose our garbage properly because if not, it can cause air and water pollution that may bring about diseases. Also, we need to have waste management or the recycling of materials that can still be used. If we just throw, and just throw away garbage in any places, the next generation will just be filled with trash. I just heard news this night, and Arnold Clavio said that it takes 10 days for a plastic to fade away, a year for a can and a Styrofoam could never fade. So, let us imagine what will happen to the world if we don’t recycle the garbage.
The episode of i-witness is making me melancholic because I know that there are many wealthy people in this world but only a few of them help these persons. Can’t they feel pity? If only I could prescribe them a medicine, I would give them a dose of reality.
I think the government must do an action now. There must be a unity between government and people. Government must focus in our social problem including overpopulation, corruption, poverty, trash, drug-abuse, homelessness, child labor, sanitary problems, health problems, environmental problems and many others. In this kind of documentary, people are becoming more aware of the reality, reality about the lives of poor Filipino people who suffers a lot.
Every documentary is an opening for awareness. It opens up our mind, that we, the middle class people are still very blessed of not experiencing those kinds of lives — Lives with garbage.
I also believe that overpopulation caused the too much garbage in our country, because we are the ones who are throwing it away in the rivers, lakes, and in many other places. More people, more garbages. The people must also have environmental awareness – by learning to appreciate the things that are brought about by nature.

This documentary merely emphasized the effect of the poverty in every family. It made them much more willing to do anything, everything in order to find some resources of food and shelters-even in dump sites without thinking the effects to their health and lives.
All the people live in dump site have one interest and work which is “pagbabasura/basurero”. They depend there meals and needs in garbage, but the most critical situation of the scavenger’s are the exposure in different diseases and contaminated materials that brought diseases like; skin disease, respiratory illness, etc. Everyday, they risk there life in order to fill those hungry stomach and most of the scavengers in dump site are young and innocent to know the possibilities accident or sickness that they can get. They forcedly do crimes in order to have money for there needs and foods for there families.

I salute them because despite of their poverty, they were not doing illegal means just to survive. Trash has been a great additional pollution to our country. We must dispose our garbage properly because if not, it can cause air and water pollution that may bring about diseases. Also, we need to have waste management or the recycling of materials that can still be used. If we just throw, and just throw away garbage in any places, the next generation will just be filled with trash. I just heard news this night, and Arnold Clavio said that it takes 10 days for a plastic to fade away, a year for a can and a Styrofoam could never fade. So, let us imagine what will happen to the world if we don’t recycle the garbage.
The episode of i-witness is making me melancholic because I know that there are many wealthy people in this world but only a few of them help these persons. Can’t they feel pity? If only I could prescribe them a medicine, I would give them a dose of reality.
I think the government must do an action now. There must be a unity between government and people. Government must focus in our social problem including overpopulation, corruption, poverty, trash, drug-abuse, homelessness, child labor, sanitary problems, health problems, environmental problems and many others. In this kind of documentary, people are becoming more aware of the reality, reality about the lives of poor Filipino people who suffers a lot.
Every documentary is an opening for awareness. It opens up our mind, that we, the middle class people are still very blessed of not experiencing those kinds of lives — Lives with garbage.
I also believe that overpopulation caused the too much garbage in our country, because we are the ones who are throwing it away in the rivers, lakes, and in many other places. More people, more garbages. The people must also have environmental awareness – by learning to appreciate the things that are brought about by nature.
